You probably have a computer at home. You probably have digital photos and music on it. You might have your checkbook balanced there. You probably have some other stuff you don’t want to lose.
If you’re like most people, you know you should back all that stuff up. If you are backing it up, good for you. You’re the minority. For the rest of us it’s either too hard, too confusing, too easy to put off… I suppose I don’t need to tell you why you’re not doing it, you already know.
I’m not trying to take the high road here, until recently I wasn’t backing up at home either. Computers are pretty reliable, they don’t crash very often at all. That’s my honest opinion, and I’m something of an expert. So, my opinion was “I don’t need to fix the roof right now, it isn’t raining.” Of course, when it’s raining I can’t fix the roof.
Enter a nifty new product – Mozy. Mozy’s software installs on your computer easily and quickly. You can choose categories (music, pictures, finanical, office, etc.) and Mozy searches your hard drive to find those types of files and backs them up. If you’re geeky like me, there is an interface you can go through to see exactly what it’s doing and get more granular control. After going through that, I didn’t need to. The Mozy software was spot on.
The initial backup can be painful. Mine took several weeks to complete. There wasn’t anything I had to do, it just took time to push 80GB of data up over broadband Internet. Since the initial push however, the backup process isn’t even noticeable. Because the software only backs up changed files, (and photos and music don’t change) it goes very fast.
Mozy gives you your first 2GB for free. Unlimited data is less than $5/mo. For $5 you can get that guilt monkey off your back. Plus, if you ever actually do have a problem you won’t be up a creek.
